Re: Steven Craig James · CRitl237ll B
Report of Competency Evaluation ` _
Dear Judge Derickson: · I
I examined Mr. James earlier today at the Main Jail. Mr. James
is twenty-three years old and is divorced. He is employed as
a butcher and has a tenth grade education. He states that he
` is a slow reader and also tends to write very slowly explaining
that he wishes to make sure his, writing is perfect. ‘
with regard to past psychiatric history, Mr..James saw a psychiatrist
A on two occasions; this was the time when he was about to go _
through his divorce. Het had no funds and thevisits were paid
for by a church. He also states that on at least five or six
p» occasions he has g._;g_;n_pged_s_u_§.c_i_ii._e by cutting his wrists with
either a razor blade or a knife and more recently toward the
end of his divorce he smashed up his car gg__ing,L2.0._ml,p,_h.
he states that he walked away without a scratch.
it is my opinion that Mr. James _i_s___cgp_mpA_e_7;_ent to stand trial. He
does understand the nature ofthe proceedings against him_ and
1 is able to assist his attorney in the preparation of his own 1 ·
defense. The patient states ·that he has already plead not guilty
and he has no plans to change his plea, therefore, the question _
of a waiver of rights is not pertinent.

ell I am not able to_give much data regarding the probable mental
gpi. condition of the defendant at the time of the alleged offense as
§§§$‘ he was quite reluctant to talk about this area with me and I
• . · `
did not pursue it. _
§§§§ In summary then, I conclude that Mr. James is competent to stand
§§?“ trial and assist his attorney in the preparation of his own
defense and there is little likelihood that this man has ever
§§gg had a background of severe mental illness. , ·
