The Honorable Judge Mary H Murguia
US District Court for the District of Arizona
p 401 W Washington, SPC 59

Re: Keith Daniel Priest: Case # CR-03—3 44-PHX—MI—IM, Booking # P240266
Dear Judge Murguia,
I don’t know if you have ever read any of the previous letters I have written to you but
this one is of the utmost importance to me. Also, Keith has many family members and
close friends who are greatly concemed about his wellbeing at this time and have a daily
prayer network for him.
After being found on his cell floor in the Florence facility on October 14, 2006, Keith
was taken to Barrow Neurological Institute, where he made a miraculous recovery to a
point, because of the excellent care he received after Dr Felipe Albuquerque inserted ll
titanium coils into the vessel in his head to stop the bleeding. He had suffered a ruptured
brain aneurysm and strokes. There were many complications over the weeks he was in
intensive care and he almost died more than once. His dad and I stayed in a motel close
by for over a month and were allowed to see him three times a day for 15 minutes. The
Spectrum security guards were nearly always polite to us and to Keith. It was an
extremely difficult time for us, the nurses and doctors and the other patients and their
families, because ofthe presence of security and false rumors that Keith had been
involved in drugs. _
My information is that Marshal Ernie Grizzel wanted to send Keith to the County hospital
for rehab but they refirsed to take him so he allowed him four weeks in the Neuroscience
Rehab at St Joseph’s. He no longer allowed his dad and me to see or talk to him. It was
an extremely diflicult time for Keith as he had to learn to swallow, urinate without a
catheter, was seeing double and had paralysis on his left side, so he could not walk and
had minimum use of his left hand. He was receiving therapy for brain injury (short—term
memory loss), eyes, occupational and physical. He had three hours of therapy a day and
it was exhausting but he did his best. The hospital staff felt like his progression was like
a miracle. We know it is a miracle that he is alive.

On December 7, the marshals took him from the hospital along with a few pieces of
therapy equipment to use on his own and took him to the 4*** Ave Jail in a short sleeved
shirt, and put him in a cold cell with no wheelchair. He was shivering and fell and had to
cross the room to get to the toilet. He is recovering from a very serious brain injury and
was afraid of hitting his head on the concrete tloor. He had been watched 24 hours a day
for almost two months and suddenly he had no help whatsoever. The Marshals made him
feel very insecure in their handling of him. He was finally given a mattress, but no
blanket. After a few hours he was transferred to Lower Buckeye Jail. On December 8,
Marshal Lindsay assured me that he was being taken care of He was cold for days, has
had very little human contact, is given blood thinner and blood pressure medication and
has seen a doctor a couple of times. He is denied therapy and his own equipment issued
from the hospital, even though his has asked Lt Rankin to give it to him. After one
month, he has not been out of the small cell once. He has a faulty wheelchair with brakes
on one side only and it spins around. He may have permanent damage if his therapy is not
continued soon. ·
My information is that he has been designated to enter a hospital, but there is danger of
him flying because of his brain injury, which presents a transportation problem.
Please release him of the misdemeanor charges. Only a mother and God could know how
much he has suffered and will continue to suffer the rest of his life. He is extremely
depressed.
His friend, Quila Rider, RN, lives in Lakeside, AZ and would be willing to have Keith in
her home and care for him. There is another RN living in her home that would help. We
live in California and want him to come here. My concern is the bad weather factor. He
l needs warm clothing, which Marshall Grizzel wouldn’t let us give to him. He could be
taken in a van to Lakeside, where he could stay until the weather is better and he is
j stronger and could withstand a longer road trip or he could come directly to California.
l I-Ie needs to be able to lie down tiequently and needs to be warm. He needs a wheelchair.
l The Spectrum security guards, such as Joyce, Stan, Owen, Merve or Mel, know him and
know how to handle him and would do a good job of moving him. He needs a qualified
medical person to travel with him and issue his medications and Quila Rider might be
allowed to fill that position.
Ifhe is released to his dad and me, we will do our best to take care of him properly. He
has many friends in and around Phoenix who are willing to help. Please let us have our
son. Hospitals are {till of staff infections and other diseases and Keith’s resistance is so
low at this time, alter having so many drugs and such a long illness. 90,000 Americans
die every year in dirty hospitals.
Keith is scheduled for a follow-up evaluation at St J oseph’s Hospital this month. Please
allow this to happen. We need to know what stage he is in concerning his rehabilitation
and what Dr. Albuquerque recommends for his iinure.

We, as parents and Keith thank God every day for the wonderful care Keith received in
