been picked up in the victim's car, a 1975 Ford , SZK-835, by j _ '_
responding on a forgery-in-progress call at the Valley National Bank at 19th? `_

The interview that followed MARTIN NORION'S interview was with STEVEN JYSMEB. STEVEN ‘_

was Monday night, maybe Sunday night. He said that MAKFIIQ told him that this guy was . — .
following him and was trying to rape him. STEVEN said that MARITN was very upset at ·.

table near the door. MARTDI went outside the i:‘ai.ler, looking for this guy, who they
observed to be mining down the drive further into the park. The guy was located Q
shortly thereafter and brought back to tie trailer. SEVEN said that MAPCPIN S]-3q>ed
the guy around, trying to get him to tell whae his mmey was at. MARIUN and IARRY
LIBBERION then took thismanout tohisonmcaraxxdpnithimixuside. STEVENt}he1‘1SBid
he drove the car. It was at this time that STEVEN JMB requested a lawyer. Shortly ·.QQ`:·ij;

At STEVEN J2=.‘~£E.S' directions, this investigator, along widu Detective Sgt. Midkiff, went .
to the desert area southwest of Salome, Arizona. At a loeatian 4,6 miles southwest of
the sheriff's substation in Salcxre, Arizona, STEVEN JAMES directed US U3 U18 P!¤P€¥'¥'·Y L_
owned by his parents. At this location he pointed out a mine shaft located on this
pro z as the place where the body of this victim €¤uld be found. 'mis investiqawr
walked to this mine shaft, and at 2:16PM, ll-19-81, viewed the body of the Victim at
the bottcrn. The victim could be seen lying on his left Side, with his heed to the

top and had been dug straight down;. The sides were fairly smoth, with SCITE area `
slightly shedding rocks. There were signs of blood and hair around this mine shaft,
ar@_in places along the sides, down towards the bottcu. There were blood Spots
and bloody rocks on the hill above; the mine shaft and appears to be the place where {

with the help of the sheriff‘s posse, using a bocm truck, the @y of the victim was _·
lifted out of the mine shaft. The body of the victim, when viewed after recovery,.g_; " ¢>§;$_&:»_a gr
was that of a male adult. The victim had dark hrown, curly hair_that_¤:11l.d_have been
afro style. The victim also had a mustache. The face of the iii;
dried blood, with the mouth partially opened. There was a ¤§
hack of the victim's head, and there were numerous abrasicns and {
body. Investigator noted, at the center cf the chest of the victim, a tb .
small, circular burn spot, possibly a cigarette burn. The victim was wear1ng.,a__lor>g— r` I3‘·§}§¢ _
sleeved, dark blue or black pullover shirt, blue jeans, brown belt, tm white ~ ·
with blue trim, and one brown earth—type shoe. The other shoe was founduat _;; _
of the mine shaft and retained. The victim had no jewelry or money cn hun. In `_ R- ..
right rear pocket was a wallet containing identification to JUAN MAXA. There was; $5
a Phelps Dodcfe Corporation card with the name, JOE ESTRADA, on it. Postzmrtexn gg
was consiswt to the left side of the position the body had been lying inet the _bot-jj; 3%
tom of the shaft. Rigor mortis was full, and the body was cold to the touch. if :
