[St. Gregory N azianzen,
Letter 101 to Cledonius]
Saturday, 19 March 2005
To: Judge Stephen lVIcNamee
Reference: U.S. v. Patrick Wayne, CR04-0938-PHX-SMM
Concerning: PATRICK VV AYNE, 73377-011 s
Sent to: Mr. Philip Seplow
Attorney at Law
2000 North 7d` Street
Phoenix AZ 85006
1. I have beenrequested by Mr. Patrick Wayne to write a letter on his behalf, which I am
very happy to do. Mr. Wayne and I have exchanged correspondence sincebefore.1997,
mainly focused on matters pertaining to the battlefield of Khe Sanh in Vietnam. His let-
ters to me usually includedscopies of documents pertaining to his continuing research, S
whichwas extensive and useful to others. He had done comprehensive research on First
Lieutenant Maxie R. Williams, one of our officers who was killed in action. He also pur-
sued research on members of a specific Marine Corps Basic Class (with emphasis on units
they served and who was killed), on a battle involving an infantry unit, and on correction
of lists based on official records of those who served in that battlefield. He contacted
numerous people and was fable to pursue an extensive degree of research that amazed me.
Occasionally some former Marine Corps officers contacted me as to whether or not they
should respond te him (since he was incarcerated), and I always responded with a positive
encouragement for them to contact him since he was never manipulative or pursuing l1is
own agendas. They always did and in several cases maintained an exchange of letters for
many years, a reflection of Patrick Wayne’s character.
2. Most important, his efforts were always directed towards honoring others, healing
pains suffered by surviving family members, and putting people in contact with others
who might be able to helpthem resolve painful experiences. His efforts were never simply
as matter of his own personal satisfaction or pursuit of selfish interest, but had at genuine
social impact of healing and preservation of historical accounts. Many veterans, and I’m
sure, many family members, are forever indebted to shim f or his-work. Forwell over-the
decade that I’ve known him through our correspondence, his pursuit of these matters was *
continuous, never flagging in zeal. He reflected a personality that was interested in oth-

ers, that could empathize, and that would spend time, effort, and work that was socially
useful. .
3. My impression is that, given appropriate treatment for his post-traumatic stress disor-
der through Veterans Administration hospitalization and treatment, finding a job, and
with social support, he would be a most productive member of society, and that we as a
society would be less without his contributions. He seems to me to be able to connect with
social support networks, given his extensive contacts with doiens of others in his research
and his interest in others.
4. As to my background and credentials: I remained on active military duty and retired in
1985 on 21 active years of service in the Chaplain Corps of the U. S. Navy. I was then a
Lieutenant Commander, USN, Chaplain Corps. I am an ordained Lutheran pastor pres-
ently on the retired rolls of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, am listed in the
current editions of VVl1o’s VVl1o in America, VVho’s VVl1o ai the World, and VVl1o’s VVl1o in
Religion. (I have been listed in these publications for the last five years). Upon retire-
ment, I founded the Khe Sanh Veterans, Inc., association, incorporated as a non-profit by
the State of Wisconsin, which currently includes some 3,000 members who are veterans of
the Khe Sanh battlefield of Vietnam. I also co-authored a book published by Houghton
Mifflin on Khe Sanh (with co-author, ]ohn Prados), Valley of Decision, and several other
nationally published books. I have been interviewed and appeared on nationally televised
programs concerning Khe Sanh: “Vietnam: A Soldier’s Story" (The Learning Channel, 6
Sep 1998), “War Stories with Oliver North: Khe Sanh” (Fox News 28 Oct 2001), and “At-
mospheres: War and Weather” (The Weather Channel, 3 Mar 2002); many of these pro-
grams have continued to air subsequently.
5. Please feel free to contact me for any clarification or other ways in which I might be
able to assist.
Sincerely,
Zum
