WILLIAM SABLAN'S SUBMISSION RE JUROR HARDSHIP SCREENING

William Sablan, through court appointed counsel, submits the following regarding procedures to be used by the Court in it's initial screening of jurors regarding hardship issues. Defense counsel renew their request for an opportunity to be heard before the Court excuses jurors for hardship based on responses to the questionnaire enclosed in the juror summons. In order to make an adequate record regarding an excusal for hardship, the defense requests access to those portions of the questionnaire that provide the bases for the request to be excused. The defense further requests that the prospective juror making the request to be excused be identified. Other than (1) identifying information, and (2) the bases for the request for excusal, the defense does not request additional information from the initial questionnaire except to the extent that additional information is being considered by the Court in determining whether or not to grant a particular request for excusal. 1
