1. On Friday, June 29th, J went to Fort Polk for purpose of accOOanying Mr. John Camp. hecutive Director of Burton Industries of tort Polk, to show him Fort Polk's growth and curi:nt mission.

Several years ago, Mr. Camp visited the then Camnding General and felt he did not receive a wann or friendly reception, considednq the fact he controlled aøproximately 44.000 mineral acres at Fort Polk Artil1ery Range. Mr. Camp infonnd me of this fact, which infonntfon was rela,yed to Major General Steete during my v.lsit to

fort Polk on 18 May 1977. KG Steele dlre.cted me to extend an 'invitation to Mr. Cam
and assured me Mr, Camp would be treated with the respec.t and dignity to which a person in his station-in-life is entitled.

No major/oil comany would likely accept risk of drilling in the impact areas which COYers an area of about 24 sections (4X6), LTC Maio, Departnnt of DPT does not believe this area can be deduded of old unexploded artillery shells which go to a depth of 18 feet. LTC Maio expressed the opinion to Mr. CamP as we flew Over the artillery range that there are certain areas on the south. north, and lesser amounts on each . side of artillery range which iilght be drilled with Httle or no interference with the military mission.
10. What of other 10caUons within the artillery range? Maybe. each requested location will be reviewed and where and if possible MG Steele will try to cooperate. MG Steele assured tlr; ~ that he was interested in improYing public .relaUon not only with oil companies during current energ crisis but with the local camunlty.
