imifs Nokia acriieved a iandmark success in the development of trrird generation
i*`t?”‘$ technology, with the compietion of the first WCDMA {Wideband Code
Wiiiig psiisis Division Multiple Access) call through the Public Switched Telephone
Network.
The full system calls were made from Nokia's test network in Finland,
using a third generation WCDMA terminal, WCDMA base station
subsystem and Nokia GSM Mobile Switching Centres, connected to the
PSTN — making it possible to complete WCDMA cails on any pubiic phone.
"This is a major miiestone in the development ot Nokia‘s third generation
technologies, it is the first call of this kind in the world," says Eero
Vailstrom, Vice President, WCDMA Radio Access Systems, Nokia
Telecommunications. "lt underiines that WCDMA tectrnoiogy based ori the
evoived GSM core network offers a superior solution for future. Nokia
continues to be a front-runner in the development of third generation
technology and by extending WCDMA to the Pubiic Switched network, this
adds a boost to ine progress of third generation, globally.“

Last year, Nokia successfully compieted the first trial cail with a Nokia-
made WCDMA terminal on NTT DoCoMo’s experimental system. The cali
was made at Nokia-i‘s R&D unit in Yokcsuka Research Park, éapao.
Nokia has been deveioping 3rd generation technoiogies since the early
1Q90‘s for standardisation in Europe, Japan and the USA. The company
started the development of a WCDMA test bed io 1992 and demonstrated
the viabiilty of WCDMA for multimedia applications at its tuily operational
test bed at 1996.
